New toilets arrive at Sung Sang's school

Dec 13 2022

Sung Sang Primary School - where 13 of the 68 students are SAD recipients - was built in 2009. At first there were two metal-roofed toilets but, unfortunately, after 13 years the toilets were no longer usable, causing great inconvenience for students and teachers, who found themselves without a place to go in safety.

The local authorities had already planned to renovate these toilets, but the budget was not there and the pupils' families do not have the financial resources to be able to contribute. But thanks to the support of GTV's Distance Support (SAD) the construction of new bathrooms began on 15 August 2022. The changes made, which should be completed in October 2022, are the expansion and renovation of the bathrooms, the arrangement and reinforcement of the roof, and the addition of sanitizing materials. Furthermore, if the previous bathrooms were not equipped with a water tank to flush the toilet, this will be inserted during the renovation. All these changes funded by SAD will help make the toilets more efficient and comfortable for children, but above all safer, both in terms of infrastructure and from a hygienic point of view. Bad hygiene practices, in fact, are not to be underestimated, because they can lead to the spread of diseases. Thanks also to previous hygiene education projects such as FIABA, now children finally have not only the knowledge to practice good hygiene, but also the adequate services to do so.

However, these are not the first bathroom construction projects that GTV is carrying out: in 2021 we helped 23 families by building them a bathroom and thanks to the donations in 2022, another 18 families will be able to benefit from new bathrooms. Toilets are essential for the daily activities and health of families, who are more or less aware of the benefits. However, approximately 90% of SAD families did not have a bathroom at home before these interventions because they cannot afford construction with their own resources.

The construction works were possible thanks to the coordination with the local authorities, who participated and monitored the constructions, but also to the fundamental participation of the families themselves. In addition to helping with the transport of materials, the families have helped work alongside the professional technicians and in this way have benefited from learning new construction techniques and skills they can use to maintain the new toilets over time and prevent them from deteriorating.

The toilet project contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: clean water and sanitation. Specifically, target 6.2 speaks precisely of the need for everyone to have a closed and delimited place to satisfy their needs and limit the transmission of diseases in the environment.

Projects like this contribute to a dignified and sustainable development of the Xin Man area, which benefits the entire population. Being able to enjoy better hygiene has positive effects on all aspects of the life of individuals and communities.
