News for “Hygiene in school”
The project “Hygiene in school” supported the construction of toilets complying with the current Vietnamese standards in 3 elementary schools who presented inadequate infrastructures; in addition to this, we included an awareness-raising component targeting the students and conducted by the teachers and supported by a group of young volunteers from Hanoi.
After receiving a request from the local partners, we decided to build an additional toilet in a fourth elementary school: that of Kha village, which is a decentralized school belonging to the complex of Van Son, one of the three municipalities involved in the project.
The commune of Van Son is located in the North East of Son Dong District and it consists of eight villages; not all of them have a school and so children often have to walk from village to village. Nearly 140 families reside in the village of Kha. The elementary school is attended by about fifty children coming from Kha and some neighboring villages.
During her mission to Vietnam (August 2015), the coordinator of GTV ms Francesca Anzi was able to visit the toilet of Kha to review the status of the work and could see that the toilet is finished and in use. In addition, a well was dug which, thanks to a pumping system, ensures that the toilet receives a steady supply of running water.
The students have been able to use the new toilet since the start of the new school year. The school principal was very satisfied with the results achieved to date and is working with the school committee to organize the awareness campaign that will start soon.
