The project against Dengue fever is completed
Mar 10 2026In January 2026, the project to contrast dengue fever on Atauro Island, in the villages of Makili and Vila Maumeta, was successfully completed. The initiative contributed both to the prevention of the disease in local communities and to the support of health centers engaged in the treatment of patients.
Between May and June 2025, informational materials were prepared and training activities were organized for the population, including two large public sessions in Makili churches and home meetings to reach all families. Details were provided on symptoms, modes of contagion and prevention practices, such as the elimination of waterlogging and the use of mosquito nets.
A training session dedicated to ten local volunteers in charge of pest control activities also took place on August 27. The project provided materials and devices for mosquito prevention and fumigation, including chemicals, mosquito nets and equipment for the production of local repellents. After training volunteers and mapping at-risk areas, water deposits were isolated and mosquito nets were distributed to families. The fumigation, carried out in the villages of Makili and Macadade in October 2025, complied with local regulations and also served as a training opportunity. All materials will remain available for future interventions at the mission of Congregation Scolopia and local health centers.
In parallel, the project strengthened health centers with diagnostic tools and over 200 dengue tests, distributed between October and December 2025, improving the capacity for diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
The project concluded with the achievement of all the objectives set:
• 20 volunteers trained to map critical areas and monitor mosquitoes;
• Approximately 2,700 citizens informed about prevention practices;
• All neighborhoods and homes in Makili disinfected and protected from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes;
• The Vila Maumeta Health Center equipped to treat dengue and also support the Dili Health Center.
