MAMI - Multi Approach to Child Malnutrition
Mar 06 2026Between the end of January and the beginning of February 2026, a training program on proper nutrition was held at the school complexes in the communes of Pa Vay Su and Che La, in the province of Tuyen Quang, as part of the MAMI project. The initiative, led by experts from the Xin Man Regional Health Center, including Dr. Long Van Kien and Dr. Hoang Thi Hien, aimed to strengthen the nutritional skills of teachers and cooks at local kindergartens through a practical approach directly applicable in managing meals for children.
The training was attended by a total of 41 participants, all women, including kindergarten teachers and school cooks; the vast majority came from ethnic minorities. The program addressed fundamental topics related to balanced nutrition, such as planning diverse meals, recognizing the four main food groups, and using the nutritional pyramid. The nutritional needs of specific population groups, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, were also examined.
Special attention was given to practical skills, with sessions on food hygiene, preparation techniques, and safe food storage, as well as the use of local ingredients to ensure nutritious and economically sustainable meals. The course also included tools to assess nutritional status and plan balanced menus for both family and school canteens.
The results of the assessments conducted before and after the training showed a clear improvement in the participants' skills, and the overall feedback was very positive: all participants attended the course consistently and rated the content as clear, practical, and easily applicable in daily work. School cooks have improved their ability to correctly calculate portions, while teachers have acquired useful tools to organize balanced meals and recognize early signs of malnutrition in children.
