The first products of the school gardens

Ott 14 2021

GTV has been able to provide the kindergartens of Nam Dan and Doan Ket, in the northern mountain area of Xin Man, with equipment and help for the creation of two school gardens. This initiative was possible thanks to fundings coming from Allitude and Project Fiaba (Progetto Fiaba) in the previous months.

The garden in Doan Ket was completed in July and is right next to the school building. Here were grown many types of vegetable and fruit, which included cabbages, broccolis, turnips, amaranth, green onions, spinach, peas, aubergines, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and papayas.
The first vegetables have been picked since mid-August and have been added to the meals of the children of the kindergarden. Before the creation of the gardens, their meals consisted only of rice.
Teachers, women’s union, parents and representatives of the village work in the garden. They have agreed on collaborating for this project. The village’s inhabitants had already given their contribution preparing the soil, building the enclosures and the irrigation system with the equipment provided by GTV.
The hard road conditions and the seclusion of the village, though, make it difficult to carry supplies and fertilisers.

In Nam Dan, the rain flooded the soil and hit the growing plants, so that an additional seeding was needed. Despite this, the garden was completed at the end of July, like in Doan Ket. The fruit plants will be seeded within a few weeks, as soon as the weather gets drier. However, the first products have been added to the children’s diet since September.
This school had not enough space in the immediate area outside. The garden was created at a 200-metre distance, on a piece of land which was donated by the parents of a student. It was possible to grow different types of fruit and vegetables also here.
Parents, teachers and school cooks are delighted with this project, which is seen also as a way to spread solidarity and encourage social relations in the village.
