Citizens of the World

GTV works with Global Citizenship Education projects, helping to create citizens of the world.
GTV’s vision states “build a bridge between East and West…”. If the vision clearly expresses the background within which to work, and if relationship and reciprocity represent part of the association founding values, therefore Trentino is in order.
Starting from international cooperation projects, from the experience about the themes dealt with in Vietnam, and from the testimonies of people who meet in the villages where they operate, GTV builds specific education proposals for global citizenship

Mentioning the main online encyclopaedia “who defines himself as citizen of the world is the one who believes that the inhabitants of the Earth form a single population”.
Creating awareness of being a part of an individual community is a specific responsibility when taking the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a reference.
The topics in which GTV is compared within other international cooperation projects in Vietnam, are exactly those of the Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Hence it is possible to start creating Global Citizenship Education projects, individual actions and materials destined to citizen of the world living in Trentino

BUT WHAT IS MEANT BY GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION?

“Global citizenship education aims to provide each inhabitant of the planet, the possibility to know and understand, during his lifetime, the issue related to global development, declining their meaning locally and personally, as well as exercise their rights and responsibilities of citizens, thus contributing to its progress towards a greater justice and sustainability”
(Definition by UNESCO)

In a world of complexity, where interconnections are increasingly evident, GTV believes it is crucial that the Trentino citizenship and in particular young people, are informed and guided to reflect on their own role of citizens of the world.

Among the various actions and projects, 4 pathways have been outlined to be implemented in schools, focuses on 4 of the different themes that GTV deals with and which refer to different Sustainable Development Goals.

  • "Family Farmers, the heroes of today" ; Sustainable Development Goal 2
  • "A river of novelty” – thematic area: water; Sustainable Development Goal 6
  • “Khe Roba” – thematic area: responsible tourism ; Sustainable Development Goal 8
  • "Water for everyone!” – thematic area: climate change; Sustainable Development Goal 13
  • "Hoa, the story of a healer” – thematic area: biodiversity; Sustainable Development Goal 15

Family farmers: the heroes of today SDG 2

Recommended age: all classes of lower and upper secondary school (contents will be modulated according to the age)
Duration: approximately 2 modules: the first one lasting 1 hour, while the second one lasting 2 hours

This topic focuses on sustainable tourism, concentrating in particular on Vietnam.
The pathway is divided into 2 moments; a first presentation meeting to present the issues related to sustainability and to tourism impact, with a particular reflection about the concept of impact and social justice, and a second meeting dedicated to the game “Khe Roba” which, by imitating the popular Monopoly, let the children experience the topics covered on a theorical level during the first meeting.
The choice to create this second meeting is related to the belief that the active population and direct involvement of the students is one of the most important vehicles for learning and that it increases the success of the intervention.

A river of novelty – water SDG 6

Recommended age: all upper secondary school classes
Duration: 3 modules composed by two lessons of 50 minutes each

GTV developed this pathway by proposing to raise awareness on the importance of water and on the issues related to it, leading young people to reflect on global issues, but at the same time on the importance of their actions, a reflection both on a global scale than personal.
The course includes moments of depth and presentation on water related concepts, alternated by group activities such as role-playing games and workshops.
The pathway is in fact characterized by a strong participation, confirmed by the kids’ desire to get involved.
By identifying and learning the importance of one’s role, we want to give young people the means to analyse and understand such a vast topic, simulating a stance and action.

Khe-Roba - sustainable tourism SDG 8

Water for everyone! – climate change SDG 13

Recommended age: all upper secondary school classes
Duration: 3 modules of 2 hours each.

The course was born as a result of GTV experience, gained in the fragile area of Ha – Giang, where water shortage and the vulnerability to climate change threaten the life of the remotest villages.
During the path, kids are encouraged to reflect on the causes and consequences of climate change, with a specific focus to water related phenomena, providing local and global examples.
Presentations and explanations are integrated with more participatory methods of comparison, in order to create an environment as stimulating as possible.
The aim is transmitting the seriousness and relevance of the topic, while maintaining a proactive attitude.
The kids are therefore involved to test themselves in group and creative activities, and to find sustainable practises together and put them into practice in everyday life.
